February 2008

Dear Comrades-In-POOP:

Let there be POOP. And there was. And it was good.

At age 21, POOP enters adulthood. After two decades of blather and bile, POOP seems to have taken on a life of its own. We’ve developed quite the tight community of music lovers who each year, with a little cajoling, faithfully bundle their favorites into cute little lists. It’s all very sweet. I feel like a proud papa (to quote one list). This year a record 36 fans, fanatics and people with some serious record collecting issues have bundled.

If you’ve been here before, feel free to skip this paragraph. As usual, I’ve attempted to tabulate the entries and, as is customary, I’ve employed the now time-honored What-The-Hell’s-He-Talking-About-Anyway System. One more time, I’ve given 2 points to each pompoid’s Top 10 choices and 1 point to each title beyond a Top 10 or in the variously designated “honorable mention” categories (up to 25 titles in all). I’ve pro-rated titles above 25 listed titles, hence the half-points. Basically, the more titles you listed, the less each one counted or something like that. Somehow it works.

So find a comfortable chair and ask, “Let’s see where he buried my list this year?” I present: the answer key:

And now, a word from our fearless PoOPmeister...

'Tis the season [again] to write POOP lists, fa-la-la-la-la.

The usual ground rules, which include:

limit your swill to 2 sides of a page

make it copy-ready by leaving at least a one inch margin on both sides

deadline: NO LATER THAN JANUARY 31st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Send to this email address AS AN ATTACHMENT, if you are able to do so

Also send me a hard copy to the address below

Toss in a few bucks. I never state how much because somehow each year your contributions just about cover the mailing/printing costs within a few bucks

spread the POOP. Anybody can contribute!

Any format that works for you works for POOP

Also send your list as an attachment to zipszig@ulster.net for CyberPOOP [viewable at pooplist.blogspot.com]

Thanks for all. Look for hardPOOP during the first week of February and CyberPOOP throughout January.

Happy Kringle and Betty Grable to you.

He's released solo record and one of the songs on it, We're All Going To Die, is about to be released as a "Christmas Single" in the UK.

The "Christmas Single" is a long-lived and somewhat odd little artifact of the UK charts.

Basically, it comes from the fact that the UK market is so small that if a (not always huge) number of people all buy a single on the same day, and for a couple of days afterwards, the song stands a very good chance of getting into the official charts. Once it's on the charts, of course, the pop radio stations must play it and thenit is on its way.

This is one of the main reasons why the UK charts move so much more quickly than the US charts. It is also the reason that underground dance music has a much better chance of reaching the charts in the UK than in the US. If every DJ in the land buys a record on the same day it gets into the charts.

And so to the "Christmas Single". It used to be that if a single was Number One at Christmas, it could expect to have a nice bump in sales as every parent and granny would buy it for the kiddies' stockings. This lead to a series of "Christmas Single Wars", set up by record companies and the music press. Blur vs. Oasis was a famous one. In recent years the media feeding frenzy has expanded to include

Then there are the charity singles. The most famous, of course, is "Do They Know It's Christmas", but there are a raft of others. Pick your charity or cause and there is bound to be a Christmas single for it. Autism, Child Poverty etc etc.

I thought I’d share my presentation in case others were interested.

Hello. My name is Ian Rogers. I’ve been building digital media applications since 1992, dropped out of a Computer Science PhD program to tour with Beastie Boys in 1995, and have been purchased by both AOL and Yahoo! in the ten years since then, with a stint running the new media department for a record label in the middle. Currently I work at Yahoo! Entertainment on Yahoo! Music.....

It is called "Sorry Vampire" and is due in stores in the US on October 2, 2007. It was completely unremarkable except for a note on the back:

This record is intentionally quieter than some to preserve the dynamics of the original performances. Visit TurnMeUp.com for more information.

Apparently, the official copy now reads like this:

To preserve the excitement, emotion and dynamics of the original performances this record is intentionally quieter than some. For full enjoyment simply Turn Me Up! (www.TurnMeUp.org)

The Slits put on a great show at the Bard College Campus Center
Multi-Purpose Room [how swanky is that name?] on Thursday 26 October. This
free concert attracted mostly a hunnerd or so Bard stoonts but there was a
smattering of nutters from out in the real world of neighboring Kingston
and Woodstock and Poughkeepsie to groove to the Slits punky dubby sounds.
After the opening acts Shellshag (the White Stripes meet Television
Personalities meet Z’ev they had the ultimate minimalist punk song with
“1, 2, 3”) and the Apes (Stereolab meets Devo) [and no, Leon Botstein did
not give a music appreciation lecture at the start of the show…] the
anticipation rose and finally out came Ari Up inna curly-locks stylee,
Tessa on bass, and new recruits No (a/k/a Nadya) on lead guitar, Adele on
scratchy guitar, Holly on harmonies, and clean-cut Anna on drums,
launching into bird sounds and John Holt’s Man Next Door. Well, Ari
tried to do bird sounds but the soundman had a little trouble figuring out
how to do reverb and there was the little issue of Ari being on the guitar
mike and No being on Ari’s mike and Tessa’s booming bass distorting
through the stage monitors but after a humorously chaotic opening it all
worked out irie. The Slits set was a great hi-energy selection of stuff
from Cut and some of Ari’s True Warriors songs: Man Next Door / FM / World
of Grown-ups / No More Cruel War / New Town / Shoplifting / Dennis Brown’s
Revolution / Typical Girls / Kill Them With Love / Let’s Do the Split
(2006 punky stylee). Lots of singing along everybody knew the words -
and some pogoing and jitterbugging (the stoonts, not the nutters) and girls
invited on stage [a ‘typical boy’ declined the honor]. Lots of bass
sound Tessa was great! Ari had the band lower volume and vamp in a
buncha songs so Tessa could dub up the bass and Ari could rap and toast
inna dancehall stylee. Everyone had a great time and two of my pompous
and opinionated colleagues hi Bill! hi Raissa! both agreed that it was
a fun show and that Tessa and Ari were great!

Why the Clash are still rock titans | Review | The Observer

It began with a White Riot in 1977 and ended in 1986 when the band split. HaCkZ! by Sven König is an amazing piece of video remixing software. It takes music videos, chops them up by beats and indexes the samples by sound signature in a database. You then beatbox into a microphone to describe the music you want to hear. The software builds the music you want out of the sample database. There is an excellent video that describes the program and has example performances. February 2006

Dear POOPster:

You’ve got POOP in your hands. The Nineteenth Annual POmpous and OPinionated List, that is. It’s hard to believe but when this whole POOPthing first started in 1987, we had a conservative Republican president surrounded by scandalous goings-on and Antonin Scalia from New Jersey had just been confirmed to a lifetime membership as one of The Supremes. It is indeed comforting to know that as America undergoes such sweeping change, POOP lumbers on. And lumber it has as 30 POOPsters have managed to get their lists past the National Security Agency and onto these pages (and onto the handsomely crafted http://pooplist.blogspot.com website).

As usual, I’ve attempted to tabulate the entries and, as is customary, I’ve employed the now time-honored What-The-Hell’s-He-Talking-About-Anyway System. One more time, I’ve given 2 points to each pompoid’s Top 10 choices and 1 point to each title beyond a Top 10 or in the variously designated “honorable mention” categories (up to 25 titles in all}. I’ve pro-rated titles above 25 listed titles, hence the half-points. Basically, the more titles you listed, the less each one counted or something like that. Trust me.

So, enough stalling already. Let’s put this past year’s releases to an up or down vote. The answer key:
